I've decided that I want to give the GL1800 to my dad. He'd enjoy it and actually get use out of it (during the riding season, anyways -- Oregon has some non-riding months unlike here). The reasons for this are many, but two of the big ones are that I can't get enough resale value out of it to make selling it worth my while and I need the garage space back. At this point I'm used to payin' the monthlies on it and I don't have all that long to go to pay it off. Side benefit: when I go visit the parents there'll be a bike there I can ride while my dad rides the VTX.

To get the bike ready for us to ride together (him on the GL, me on the GS) and to possibly take back up to Oregon (weather permitting) I need to do a few bits of maintenance. This includes changing the oil, brakepads and a general inspection. I came home from work a little early, $120 of parts in hand (darn those brake pads can get pricey!) and cracked the service manual. Much to my surprise and continued survival I did the brakes correctly and survived the test ride. Changing the pads is much easier than I thought! I upgraded to "HH" style ones which all the other GL1800 riders I know use. Even though they're not broken in yet (that takes 250 miles of city riding or so) I can already tell they're much more responsive. With a lighter rider (my dad weighs half or less what I do) they'll last a lot longer too.

The tires have another 4k-mi left on them so they're good enough to get my dad back to Oregon and hold out until next season. The bike could use a good washing but otherwise all is OK. The only question now is how to properly move the insurance over to him even though I'm going to be the one that keeps paying on the bike.

I'm just really pleased with myself in that "Ugh, me use tools and not kill self!" kind of way that maintaining the bikes always causes. Don't worry, the Tim-Allenish nature of things never lasts long. :)
