Through one of the smartphoneOS boards I'm on I met a contractor who is working at Microsoft. This person asked to remain anonymous. He was as grumpy as I was about AT&T's abuse of the MPx200 with their custom firmware load. The AT&T version shuts off one of the frequencies, turning it from a tri-band phone into a dual-band one. They also removed MMS because it had compatibility problems with their proprietary junk.

This helpful fellow slid me a copy of the original Motorola firmware under-the-table which I happily installed. The whole procedure (including backing up my existing /IPSM folder to my SD card) took about 20 minutes. I've had to re-install all my apps and re-do my registry hacks, but now the phone has full MMS and all three frequencies! Every trace of AT&T's presence is completely gone and the phone now works like it was supposed to.

As a nice bonus, this was the latest release of the firmware. It includes the camera application for the not-yet-here SDIO camera attachment. The MMS client (known as jMMS) was pretty easy to configure for T-Mobile, though I had to go and add "picture messaging" to my account to be able to receive pics. It sends them just fine w/o the extra fees, FYI. :) I signed up for a mobile blog site and once I get a good camera combination together I'll try out doing a picture-log.

The contractor encouraged me to distribute this release as techcnially it's what comes on the phone if you bought it straight from motorola or any non-carrier-specific vendor. The legality of this is honestly unknown, though, so I don't think I will just yet. There are a number of other sites putting it online that are willing to take the risk. Just email me if you want links to them.

Definitely! I'm always up for mobile application testing. That's part of what my office does, so it's even related to the day-job... :) I've got an array of hardware to test against.
