Today was such a blow-off day. I don't do many of those, honestly... so I enjoyed it. A touch of oversleeping meant I was in late... but my bossmen were even later, so no worries. Nobody was getting anything done, so when I informed them I'd be taking a 2-3 hour lunch, the general response was "go for it".
A quick sprint up Highway 9 to Alice's Restaurant was a blast. I bumped into a few friends from the ADVRider list, and we gave a proper send off to one of our own as he began a 4-week long, purposefully-unplanned motorcycle journey. I can't wait to be in a similarly good fiscal/career condition so I can do the same thing. I got there late, with just enough time to get that picture and share a few laughs before they all rode off. Oh, a note on the picture: that's considered the standard "ADVRider Salute". Childish, I know, but it's a boys-and-their-toys thing. If you get a group picture of any of them together, the ADVRiders will always do that.
The only downer: I finally asked one of the staff at Alice's if the restaurant was in any way related to the folk song of the same name. The answer? No. They don't like to admit it unless you're a regular, though. One waitress noted that they used to proudly decry any association with the song; this didn't go over too well with some of the tourists. Expecting it to be in a famous 1960's-era memorabilia site, people would get anywhere from depressed to enraged to hear it wasn't true. Evidently one middle-aged lady had come there all the way from England, and broke down in tears when she found out it wasn't true, and there is no real 'Alice's Restaurant' as sung about by Arlo Guthrie. As a result the current management is happy to let folks assume it's true unless you pester them for exact facts. I have to admit, it bummed me out just a little too, though I'm not sure why. A quick check of their website shows they now promote the song tie-in, even though it was really only named for the owner at the time. The good side, as the waitress put it, was that the restaurant was indeed quite a hippy-love-fest 60's hangout back in those days, song or no.
I'm going to continue being a slacker today and take off from work to start my Labor Day weekend early. As I'm the last person in the office as I write this, I don't think anybody who signs my paycheck will mind. :)

Please forgive the crappy photo. It was done with the office's little digicam and flash, and it makes my overly light skin-color (oh the joys of being a redhead, bleah) look pretty nasty. That's a 4ga segment ring, and it's the biggest ring I'm going to have. As stated in an earlier post, I do plan to make the hole bigger, eventually putting in an ear grommet, and I'll hang this current ring through it. It shouldn't be scary big when I'm all done... weird, but not terribly high on the freak factor. I dont' want any bigger/heavier rings because I don't want gravity to start giving me the National Geographic look.
