A somewhat busy journal-day today. Heh.

I just picked up my room reservations for Death Valley Days VIII. Held a weekend before Confurence, DVD-8 is a 'relax-a-con' for airhead/oilhead motorcycle riders. I've heard it's a smattering of 100-300 crazies on various BMW bikes of all years and sizes, plus a bunch of their non-beemer riding friends. I'm seriously looking forwards to it.

The goal here is to get there and back. Held at the time it is, and crossing the mountain passes it does, the trip down there can be a serious adventure. Rain, snow, serious cold. It's going to my first real test of some of my gear, and I'm a bit excited about it. Once you actually get to Death Valley, it's much better. The days are 60-65 degrees and dry, down at -282ft below sea level. The nights, however, are shockingly cold and clear. This is why I wimped out a little and got a motel room in Stovepipe Wells instead of going the whole-psycho routine and camping out in a tent. I don't have four-season gear. The ride back is just as much a terror as the one there, traditionally.

I've got Thursday off to prepare, and will be leaving stupid-early Friday morning. I will be there until Sunday morning, trying to make it home before sunday night. I'm giving myself extra time in case I get road-stranded or have to hole up for shelter if the weather really nails me. Monday is a sleep-and-recover before returning to work the Tuesday following. I'll work T-Th, and a half-day Friday, before going to the weekend part of the FC Convention.

The event is just an excuse to hang out with like-minded two-wheelers, and to explore the beautiful roads throughout the valley floor. There's a lot for the road-bikers to do, but as I'll be going on the GS I'm going to be following my oilhead kin into all the little remote box canyons and dirt grades through the hill-ridges. It should make for some grand stompabout exploring, and hopefully many pictures. Currently I have no riding partner for this event: Dusty's motorcycle will be in pieces while he does a full rebuild/upgrade, and this kind of event just isn't [livejournal.com profile] reality_fox's cup of tea. Some of the folks from the Adventure Rider board will be there, so there'll be familiar faces once I'm at the event.

If anybody who reads this is a bay area motorcyclist and wants to come down for this amusingly over-the-top event, please contact me! The motel room I reserved has two beds, and you're welcome to take the spare, at no-cost if need be (though I'd definatley not mind going dutch). A riding partner for safety would be worth it.
