Hardware

Since I seem to be surrounded by folks being liberally dunked into new hardware acquisitions (such as [livejournal.com profile] revar's new iLamp and [livejournal.com profile] tuftears's many new machine escapades) I should add mine into the pile.

Since my company is a tiny one that doesn't really do the yearly-review-and-raise thing, they instead let us upgrade some of our daily hardware. I exchanged my not-so-bad Thinkpad for the new Dell of Fun: 1GB of RAM, P4-M 1.7GHz, 60GB HD, 15.2" LCD EUXGA screen (1600x1200 native) with 165deg visibility @ 700 lumens, built in WiFi, Firewire, DVD-ROM/CD-RW, and all the usual ports (network, modem, etc). The key, though, is the video chip: a GeForce4-2-Go 64Mb.

It's sooooo nice to have a Tribes-capable laptop. I know it won't get used that way, as I actually do real work at work... but still, it's nice. Mostly I'll appreciate the UberScreen for all the dang Visio work I have to do. Also, this is the first laptop that has a keyboard good enough to keep my typing speed up to full on.

The only other new hardware in my life is an upgrade to the MP3 player (got an e.Digital MXP100 so I could use my microdrives) and an addition of a 5/8th's-over-1/2 colinear antenna for the GMRS 5w radio on my Gold Wing. Finally, real range on bike-to-bike comms...

I'm actually really grooving on [livejournal.com profile] revar's iLamp. I used to have an iMac for video editing, so it's nice to see such an upgrade. The DVD-writing ability is just too much fun. I'm going to load it up with a proper suite of video editing software and go to town on some of my old tapes. Half of my degree-studies in college was in Television/Film Production, so I really enjoy getting to mess with nonlinear editing systems like this.
