Public Webcomics Services Announcement: The new Belfry WebComics site is online!

The Belfry WebComics Index is a project started over a decade ago by my buddy and business partner [livejournal.com profile] revar. Originally started as a way for Revar to keep track of the handful of webcomics he read on a daily basis, it grew into a larger, database-driven programming project over the years. Now indexing over 5,000 comics (and rapidly growing!) the site was upgraded to a community-driven, admin-reviewed system so that it can keep on top of the submissions.

A short primer: The Belfry Webcomics Index is a searchable archive of thousands of web comics and online graphic novels. The best way to use it is to sign up for a free account (no spam, we promise!) and 'subscribe' to the comics you read most often. This gives you a list you can go through to read your daily/weekly/etc comics, in either a frames or non-frames mode as you please. It also lets you participate in community features. New comics are added in every day and show up in a 'new comics' list you can browse and add to your subscription list as you wish.

If you're a webcomics creator and see your webcomics listed on the site, you can create an account and gain control over your sites' entries. Just let us know which are yours and we'll link them to your account. You can edit, categorize, comment or delete at will.

The Belfry site is unique in that it allows the creators of the comics to have full control over their database entries if they wish it while still letting our community submit, file and maintain new entries as they come in. This gives us a good balance of keeping updated while still offering creative control. This combo has become a significant traffic generator for a lot of webcomics in their early days. We're still surprised with how many artists have told us they're getting 'a large number of hits' from the belfry.com site.

Revar has been working on this major upgrade for the last six months. Today it finally went live, at the belfrycomics.net site. The older www.belfry.com/comics site will redirect to the new one. In addition, our "Purrsia.Com" hosting system -- some 70+ domains of webcomics, artists and personal sites -- is no longer trying to keep it's own index on the purrsia.com main page; it redirects to the belfrycomics.net site as well. Any donations that go towards Purrsia will now support the Belfry.

We currently support the site out of our own pockets, as we have since its inception. With this new release we're now able to support promotions and advertising, and we'll soon be offering advertising slots to folks within the webcomics industry. Our goal is to increase promotion of webcomics in general, so any ads we run will be for comics sites and services. We may also be running the less intrusive Google Adwords system as well. If you're curious to promote your comic (or your services to the comics industry) on The Belfry, please, let us know!

Donations are highly appreciated -- a donations button will be up soon. Buying banner ads for your webcomic, even moreso!

Give the new system a try and let us know what you think. Revar is quick to implement improvements and fixes. We know there's always going to be a few bugs to shake out any time there's a major code release, so don't be shy in telling us your thoughts on the site. Thank you, and enjoy!

Wow, I'd almost forgotten about the old comic index page. I used to make use of it somewhat often.

Can I let you know here? I have the same name there, comic is Sinister Bedfellows... and I'm a friend of Carlota's :)

Hehe... I was wondering why Revar wasn't working on Trebucket/Tk. Now I know.
