Why I think it's a toss-up unless you are seriously at risk of complications if you get the flu. Even though I'm exposed to the public, and worst of all, kids, five days a week, I get actual flu symptoms perhaps once every five years. Doesn't seem worth getting a vaccination that is just as unpleasant every single year...
oh, it's not *too* bad. Also, after having a Martian Death Flu a number of years ago, I never want one of those again. I'll take years of shots over even a partial flu like that again.
Thing is, even if you take the vaccination, it may not protect you. It's all a series of dice tosses. ;p
I tend to feel much worse with common colds, which I do get about once a year, and for which there is no effective prevention at all (other than living in a bubble.)
For me, cold last longer and make me seem more miserable, but once you've had a serious flu, you never want one again. I used to think flus were just colds++ and no huge deal until that Sydney-B outbreak that caught most of my office (co-worker brought it back from an overseas trip).
It's weird...I've had some flu shots that knock me down for two days, others left me feeling perfectly fit with no ill effects. Usually it's just that punched-in-the-arm feeling though, yeah. I hope your episode passes quickly!
Yeah, it's the punched-in-the-arm thing this time, mostly. It's really not all that bad, other than for the day or so it lasts it keeps feeling like if you could move your arm juuuuust right it'd feel better, but that never works. Harrumf! :)
Yeesh, craziness with the naysayers. Sorry you're wiped out, but much better than getting the flu! Mine is scheduled at the uni in two weeks- nasal inhalents for me, no needles needed!
Every year I have gotten the flu shot it works beautifully. It never fails within a couple weeks of getting it I got the worst knock down, drag out, take me completely out of commission for a full three weeks. Without it I can get some nasty colds, and once pneumonia, but no flu. Here's hoping that we all stay nice and healthy this year!!
Back in the day when the company I work at gave free flu shots, they always scheduled it on Friday. That way all the workers could be sick over the weekend and come back to work Monday healthy again.
But then came the year where there was a vaccine shortage, and the company just forgot about it ever since.
Here's the reason everyone, even those not 'at risk', should get their flu shot. I have asthma, and can't afford even one case of the flu. The flu shot, however, is only 70% effective. If you have the flu, and I have the shot, there's still a 30% chance I will get the flu. However, if you have the flu shot, then the math is 30% times 30%. If everyone has the flu shot, it's 30% * 30% * 30% * 30% and so on and so forth. If enough people got the flu shot, the virus would be unable to find a suitable host, and through what's called "herd immunity", NO ONE would get the flu.
