And now for the Great Shuffling
Jul. 4th, 2009 05:57 pmSo far so good. We had lunch at a wonderful little Peruvian dive down on Monterey Highway. Dusty said it's the best taco he's had in Northern California. It's worth returning to and is only a few blocks from the shop.
First, to get it out of the way, a panorama of the shop now that everything's been moved in. Warning, this image is kind of

(OMFG CRAZY big version can be found here: Big Big Pic: 22,190x 2843 I warned you!)
The new security camera is in place with a good overview of the shop. The other two come in soon. That way we'll get front office coverage and out-to-the-street coverage when the main garage door is open. But for now, we at least have the main internal floorspace:

That's Inaki there, since he dropped by to help out with getting the cameras up. :) Also, HUGE thanks to everybody who came by yesterday to pitch in! Peter, Brian, Granite, Brian the Second (heh!), Dusty, Kim, and of course Garth. Even our old boss Jeff (from Navitel) dropped by for a bit. Between them and some loaned forklifts on each end of the trip we got the last of the big items out. The keys were handed back to the old landlord on July 3rd. This means we're out of there a full month before our deadline. The old landlord has already been showing the place so there's now a non-zero chance we'll get a month of rent back. Here's to hoping!
Now all we really have to do is get organizing. While everything may be in boxes or up on the racks, it's kind of random. As we start resuming projects there'll be a natural filtering of things. Dusty's already been doing that to his own stuff today, stopping to watch the AMA races on the front-room TV between tasks. At least all the BurningMan stuff is put away correctly.
ToDo items that remain:
About that last one: I want to commission some nice big images that I can wide-format print and put on some of the major interior shop surfaces. Since money is tight (this move was soooo not cheap) I'd very gladly trade large-format and fine-art printing services, laser engraving services or shop services for the art -- or a mix of money and the trades. Here are the five areas we want to get images put on:

We're hoping to get art that's themed around welding, building, making and tinkering. Dragons, monoceri and other big-tough critters are encouraged. I'll be printing them on self-adhesive vinyl and covering those areas edge to edge as best I can, depending on the aspect ratio of the art. These will be extremely visible to anybody who visits the shop, so I'm hoping to get some decently detailed pictures.
As a good idea of the kind of thing I mean, peek at Vantid's "Dragon of Industry"; that kind of thing. :)
Any interested takers? Drop me a line at tugrik@gmail.com to see what kind of money/services/trade you'd take in exchange. Thanks!

ToDo items that remain:
- Mount compressor to the slab by the entry door.
- Run all the shop-air lines around the shop (hardest task)
- Hire a real electrician to run circuits along the back wall and welding circuits ($$$)
- Pick up a little more racking to complete the shelves
- Find a huge, beat-up (but servicable) couch to put in the shop itself for folks to hang out on
- Decorate the place!

Date: 2009-07-08 09:39 pm (UTC)you could take some extreamly high res pictures of the city skyline and then play with peoples' minds by printing them out on the giant printer you have and light box mounting them to look like windows.
Or would that just be too "David Letterman?"
