Just to officially mention it in the journal: I'm not going to run the photoshoot this year at FC. Kyreeth is doing it solo this time around. Between my back issues of late and the unknown new hotel I figure it's just a good year to take a break from photography things. That's not to say that I won't bring the camera and snag random photos; just no huge studio setup for me this time around. I've never actually just attended FurtherConfusion; I've always worked it instead. The first year I hosted the Yerf! party, and I've been running a photoshoot every year since.

Next year my idea is to attend as a media services dealer instead of a photographer. By then I should have convention-portable versions of the laser engraving and fine art printing gear. My idea is to be able to do fine-art level prints for artists and attendees directly at the convention, as well as sell both wooden and metal tags (no plastics, though, due to the scent they generate during cutting) made-to-order. It's a more fun place I'd like to take Monoceros Media than just the portrait-studio work. My goal would be to make it reliable enough that artists could depend on me to be able to print work at-con if they couldn't travel with it, both for art-show quality stuff and print sales.

Of course, if any photographer-type wants to hook up with me and run a photo booth while we run the software/storage/printing ends behind it (an expansion of what we've done in past years), I'd love to hear from you; we could use a good cameraman! And yes, I'd let you use my camera gear, though you'd still need to rent flashes/backdrop (which I can assist with).

Another side question. If I could find a way to bring just the mega-printer this year, would anybody make use of it? Or do you think it'd be better to just leave it home this time and try just being a normal con-goer instead?

It'll be good to be able to see you at the con other than after it's all finished!

Join us for pickup RPG games! };>

There were nifty L5R and 4e games in years past, and IronClaw/JadeClaw games have also been floated.

It would be neat to see the mega-printer in action, but you'd have to find someone to baby-sit it and also make sure you'd figured out your costs and got your company tax number settled out. It's not alot of trouble, but...

It will be nice to see you around and about, though how to find you will be tougher!

Go to con! See what it's like without big things to make it absolutely imperative for you to stay in one place babysitting stuff!

Tugrik, you've done so much for folks already - leave the printer at home and just go for yourself. Spend some time with folks you wouldn't get to see often otherwise. :)

Leave the printers at home for FC.

The metal tags, though... what is needed to etch those? 200 dpi PNG?

Nobody would make use of it. Who's going to be traveling around with ultra-high-rez versions of their art? Anyone who needs large-format printing will know in advance and will contact you in advance. If someone needs something onsite, they can contact you and get it as an overnighter.

Enjoy the con. You need more fun in your life.

Awww, I'll miss taking photos with you, but can totally empathize. You deserve a con to yourself! Hopefully I'll be able to find you and say hi. It would be cool to actually be able to chat a bit when you don't have 100 different things going on.

Oh, yeah. Man-portable laser etcher/cutter sounds like a wonderful idea. Start off by just making some prefab pieces on the spot that morning, doing calibration and stuff with scraps. Then having a few sheets of material ready to go so every now and then you can accumulate enough orders to just burn a pageful -- that'd attract furries like free cake. Mmm, delicious laser thingy! Etched plaques and badges while-you-wait! And is that buttercream frosting?!

But this latest FC? Go lightly, dude, and explore the place inside and out. Meet others in their own habitat, and all that.

Tug, you got a catalog for fabbing services? Might need 'em sometime next year for a major project.
