Career Milestone - 100% achieved.
Sep. 26th, 2003 12:00 pmOne year and 18 minutes ago I was asked by my boss to flip a little access-rights switch. This switch granted our first customer live access to our AGPS (Assisted Global Positioning System) data stream. The customer was a large cellular telephone provider and they needed the data to enable the new, federally mandated "E911" (Enhanced 911) emergency service. With their cellular system, new handset hardware and our data stream we enabled them to find a 911 cellular caller's location far better than the federal standard required.
I was the only employee in the IT Department when the bossmen asked me to design and implement this network. We had almost no budget when we began, using scavanged equipment, ebay purchases and stuff cobbled together from other companies' scraps. The goal? "Five Nines", aka 99.999% uptime. This equates to only allowing 5m:14s of downtime a year, if I'm doing the math right.
We beat that. 100.000% uptime, baby. A career first for me. *happy stomp-about dance*
This network is currently the primary revenue stream for the company. We have multiple very large customers and their presence has started to attract the smaller ones in droves. I've now got two partners with me in the IT Department and we have a real budget. Tin-cans-and-string level gear has been replaced with proper, heavy-duty equipment. Servers stacked on desks have become proper data centers with environmental and power controls. The next 100% and the ones after that should be far easier, with less late-night pages and 'four out of five redundant systems just went down, but the fifth is still holding!" panics.
I think I'm going to go relax and have a nice long ride this weekend. Maybe, for a change, I deserve it this time. :) Now if only my company gave out bonuses...
