We got majorly monster-invaded for halloween. We actually managed to give away most of the candy even though we massively overbought like we do every year. Dusty was costumed up in his Usagi Yojimbo suit, leaping out at the kids. It worked very well. Afterwards was a BBQ that was quite enjoyable, along with a good friend making some really interesting sour-and-champagne jello snacks.

Saturday and Sunday were both spent doing various Shopping Deeds(tm). There wasn't really anything we wanted; it had just been a while since we'd slummed around various stores. Of the handful of things we ended up with only a few proved to be useful, such as a new thermostat for the house we could set timers on and some batteries. The rest consisted of some videogames Revar picked up for the GBA and a silly web-cam thing I'll get to in a minute. The rest was all window shopping. I was looking for a Motorola MPx200 smartphone for my office's use and also those new Microsoft SPOT watches that were supposed to be out Nov. 1. Turns out the Motorola is out of stock everywhere and the SPOT watches were delayed -- probably until well after Christmas. No big loss there, though.

Strangely I got into this mood about looking for more dress-uppy things. The Big&Tall catalog that I have has full business suits that will actually fit me... and I'm tempted to get one or two. If I'd done it early enough I could have worn one on Halloween and freaked out everybody at the office. :) To go along with that I was looking at strange ties, dress shoes and even more awkwardly (for me, anyway) -- dress watches. This is so strange for me because I can't really respect a watch unless it has to come with a manual more than 40 pages thick. The last non-gadget watch I've had was a Darth Vader 'only tells the time' one my mom got me as a kid. So, the idea of paying a decent chunk for a watch that has nothing but a time/date dial but otherwise "goes well with an outfit" is completely foreign. It was a compelling mental shift, though, so I ran with it and browsed the huge collections at Macy's and various jewler stores.

If I do end up buying one, there's a Fossil one for about $115 that caught my fancy. I couldn't quite do it, though. That's a lot of money for something that doesn't also take pictures and have a built in compass. Yes, I know my standards are tweaked. :) It's a very pretty watch with a nice blue face and a simple chonograph. The band will fit once I add a link (free) and it's pretty slimline on the wrist. There's also the the same one with a grey face, which while isn't as favorite as the blue will probably go better with any suit I'd end up getting.

In the "convenient timing" department, the roomies, [livejournal.com profile] chareth and I all went to a fancypricey place called Parcel 104. The food was very good with amazing (if tiny) desserts. The appetizers were amazing and the flavors were a new experience for me that I'd honestly like to keep exploring. The main entree (steak), however, was not as good as I've had for the same or lower price. This was just this one item, though... the others who had different things all enjoyed their entrees to a very high degree. When the bill was paid, though, I had this urge to duck and cover. I can honestly state that this is the most I've ever paid for a dinner in my life, even including the pricy-fancy places Frang and I have been to in our more sordid dot-com past. As much as I like the food, I doubt I'll be back to Parcel anytime soon. Ask me again if my company's stock ever goes public. The reason this is amusing timing is that this is the kind of restaurant I would have preferred to wear a (casual) suit to, with a nice dress watch and a better haircut. There's something nice about looking good while going to a place where it's expected. Even a tribal-skank like me can appreciate that.

Dusty still has his Usagi fursuit? How very cool! He's done better than myself. My fursuit died years ago. It's a good thing I'm working on getting a new one. :)

Freaking everyone out at the office with a suit would have been hilarious. It actually works. We had an engineer who is always dressed down do it. You couldn't help but notice and laugh.
