Where to go?
Nov. 30th, 2003 11:13 pmYou've got a decent (but frugal) vacation budget, 9 days off (over the New Years week), a functional long-distance car (if you choose to drive) and the willingness to put up with air travel (if you wish to fly). You're based in California. Taking photos is a primary desire. Seeing online friends in RL is a huge plus if they're en route.
Where would you go on vacation, given those parameters, and why?

Date: 2003-12-01 01:26 am (UTC)Since you ask, I would go to Hawaii, but I'm biased and have also been looking at rates for exactly that stretch of time. Don't know if we can actually go, since money is tight, but perhaps you can use the information we've gathered.
Any seven days in Hawaii from New Year's through the two or three months after have packages that include round trip air, hotel, and rental car at around $600-$700 per person. About the most affordable time of year, and seems very pleasant without many other tourists around. This is assuming landing in Oahu, but I don't think the other islands are much more expensive.

Date: 2003-12-01 04:42 am (UTC)I loves me some Blues Brothers. :D
Personally, I'd just drive to Vegas and see all the Cirque Du Soleil shows. But I might be a bit preoccupied. >.>

We do get the stupid snow though....
Destinations.
Date: 2003-12-01 06:38 am (UTC)For a winter trip, I'd either visit relatives and stay indoors (bonus points for cousins or their children who I can take sledding or fort-/snowman-building), or go to some kind of resort hotel (possibly near one of my uncles or cousins elsewhere in the country).
The southern US would be a tempting destination if I knew anyone there beyond a handful of furs that I've seldom or never met in person. It would also likely be out of budget (I don't do road trips longer than about 6 hours, and plane tickets aren't cheap relative to my budget). Australia would be a great place to visit (went there once years ago), with great photo-ops, but similar caveats apply.
Good luck, and have fun }:>. If you have the funds, consider the Australia option };>. You can probably rent a bike for road-tripping, or take one of the cross-country bike trip packages.

As for how I know Tugrik...
Here I was thinking I was all original and stuff,
When this guy comes in and posts on my journal because
"He never meet a dragon named Tug, because that's my name."
Which completly decimated me,
So now I raise an all Tugging war in hopes of dethroning him!

Date: 2003-12-01 08:30 pm (UTC)There are some very awesome lodges and hotels, and if you go, I definitely recommend brunch at Lake Louise and a hike up to the Tea Cottage. Lake Louise is a glacier fed lake, and the most awesome glassy green-aqua-blue you'll ever see. There's a stunning hotel just meters from the lake, which seems cut from a European tour guide. Very posh to stay in, too. ^_^
Banff itself has some pretty neat pubs and shops and hotels, and anything else you might need to keep busy. Again, pretty lively during the 'off' season as everyone goes out there to ski during the winter. :)
Not a good idea to go out there during the rutting season for deer, though. They...kinda just wander around along the sidewalks with pedestrians. Can make for interesting strolls.
Not to mention you can take a nice drive up through the mountains, and stop by Calgary and Edmonton, browse through Ikea and meander around West-Edmonton Mall, Canada's biggest mall. If you like doing that sort of thing. :)
