Where to go?

You've got a decent (but frugal) vacation budget, 9 days off (over the New Years week), a functional long-distance car (if you choose to drive) and the willingness to put up with air travel (if you wish to fly). You're based in California. Taking photos is a primary desire. Seeing online friends in RL is a huge plus if they're en route.

Where would you go on vacation, given those parameters, and why?

From my (limited) experience there, there's plenty for us non-drinkers to do. Probably one of the best selections of restaurants anywhere, for example. Lots of cool/weird history stuff. Tons of fabulous graveyards. All sorts of festivals, though not sure what'd be going on this time of year. (Ask the Bigger Brain on that and the weather, I'd say...) Nice zoo, nicer aquarium. Architecture. Lots and lots of photo ops!

Can you tell that the Hubby and I had a really good time there? Heh.
