Don't be afraid to laugh. Don't be afraid to show sadness. Expressing emotion is not a sign of weakness. Instead, think of it as a way to keep in contact with your fellow living creatures.

Sure, there may be some form of honor or strength in keeping things bottled behind a stony face... but it's a lonely form of honor indeed.

I cried in the arms of a friend while watching Return of the King last night, and felt the very same thing, if not in so many words.

Joy is easy. Sadness sometimes hurts too badly to let yourself feel it for a while. The "stiff upper lip" is a way to avoid the problem until you can deal with it. It may not be "honor", it may be survival. The trouble is that it can effect a change in your lifestyle or life.

Sadness is hard, agreed. The point prompting the post, however, was the opposite: those who cannot express joy, for fear it makes them look 'weak'. Those are the ones I worry for this late season.

Yes, it's a tragic thing not to be able to feel joy. There is so much in the world to feel good about if you let yourself. An so little time to waste. Life is too short not to enjoy it.

It's a good thought.

I didn't get to answer you the other day when you were talking about learning about yourself.

I always wanted to see more of your feelings. When I did see them, they delighted me. Your smile (at me!) at Safari West I still remember. I felt like you made the sun rise.

I've also been learning a lot. And sometimes, you let things out, and sometimes, you don't. There is a season for everything and a time to every purpose under heaven. That's what I've been learning. Balance, moderation, and when sometimes it's right to not control.
