The internet is full of all kinds of useful and terribly un-useful information. While this makes filtering through the crud to find good information hard sometimes, it's extremely rare to go hunting for a subject and simply not find much of anything at all. So when it happens, I tend to assume that it's not that there's no information -- it's that I don't know how to find it.

Over the last year and a half I've been collecting a lot of good data on what it takes for an overweight person to become a reasonably safe motorcyclist, and have a good time doing so. I'm putting this information together soon as a website for others to benefit from... kind of a "fat bikers FAQ". I think it would be useful, as most bike sites are either dedicated to the skinny and athletic sportbiker types, or to the polish-the-chrome and cruise-to-the-bar Harley types. People who just want to tour or maybe even be sporty, but have put on the pounds, are kind of left in the cold.

As part of putting this site together, I'd like to put up links to other peoples' sites that have fat-biker information. The problem is that I can't find any. Google searching (as I refuse to use 'google' as a verb just yet) with various mixes of the keywords overweight, fat, biker, motorcyclist, FAQ, guide, etc. are coming up very empty of any useful information. Most often the web pages I get are humor sites with jokes about fat Harley riders.

So this request: If you're good with search engines, could you, dear reader, try to find me a few good links with useful hints/tips/FAQs for overweight motorcycle riders? I'm just as interested in the keywords you used to find them as I am the sites themselves. Specific bits of information I'm looking for are guides for oversized safety gear, recommendations on bikes for heavy riders, tips on suspension work to enable riding of bikes that normally wouldn't support big people, etc. Comfort and ergonomics issues for motorcycle touring would be a great example. If you find anything, either just zip a reply to this post, or email me. I'd much appreciate it!

The site I will be making will be a grouping of stories, lessons learned, links to others' sites, links to big-rider-friendly manufacturers and a community bulletin-board. I'm hoping by this time next year I can repeat these google searches and start finding links to the site I've created, and to the other sites it has inspired other big riders to do. :)

I searched on:

'Increasing Load weight load capacity for motorcyles.'

Here's one of the (IMHO) really good ones:

An article on modifying suspension for weight loading. Comments on giving different ride feel based on how the springs are set up. Good technical explanation of 'why.'

I searched on: 'Motorcycles for overweight people' and found a story (on hit page #5) from someone who admits to being 'moderately overweight' and a biker:
Bikergirl link from whom you might find some good helpful stories for your page.

I searched on: 'large people and motorcycles' and this caught my eye off the New Zealand Motorcycle Tours:
What should I ride ?

New Zealand does not have any autobahn or interstate highways so while the riding may not be fast, not much of it is in a straight line either ! Here’s a quick guide for the models we have,

Two large people with luggage:Harley Davidson, BMW R1100GS, Honda VT1100, Suzuki GSX1100G, BMW R1100R.

Thought this might be helpful since it narrows the field of 'bikes to buy/rent/borrow for an aspiring rider' down to a tourism board's recommended models. (the site)

Okay, that was fun. Hope this helps.

Anyway. I've got to get some work done...
