We are the robots...
Aug. 13th, 2002 05:22 pmOne block south of my office, a sidestreet (named Windham) was blocked off. There were four cop cars, a swat van, a few firetrucks, and other official looking vehicles. There was also a KRON-TV newsvan, with its microwave link antenna raised up full height.
The light wasn't red long enough for me to get a good look... but as I pulled away I caught a glimpse: they had the robot out, and it was moving towards a building behind the gas station. They only pull the robot out if it's something terribly serious (bomb, holed-up-crazy-gunman, etc) or if it's a training exercise. The fact that the media van was there suggested seriousness -- but everything was so calm. Folks were wandering around and casually observing the robot's actions. This makes me think it was only a training exercise. I'm going to watch the news tonight (which is rare for me; local news is so nastily sensationalist most of the time) and see if they say what was going on.
I like the SJ police robot. It looks like it should be in the battlebot arena or picking rocks off of the martian surface with its huge gripper-thingy.
