Sep. 23rd, 2002 09:23 amJust a quick note before I run in to work, because I feel the need to tell somebody about this.
I got the 2nd stage blood tests and such back today. All the vitals? Dead center normal. For instance, that nasty cholesterol number that most tubby Americans seem to have an issue with? Well, you're supposed to be between 100-200 to be in the 'safe' range. I'm at 161. This just makes me grin ear to ear. I don't know what the heck I've done right, but I'm not going to question it at this point.
Well, okay, I am questioning it a bit; it's my nature. How can someone who's been so overweight for so much of their life have numbers that are so utterly normal? Even my doc was a bit surprised. If anything it's encouraged him to kick my ass about weight loss to make things even better. Go figure. :)

Date: 2002-09-23 09:52 am (UTC)I am so used to ren faire etc. that it came as a complete SHOCK to me when I had a housemate that was fat because she sat on her ass all day eating candy. Until then, fat was just the way some people were built. All those things you listed a while back, all the activities like walking and dancing etc.? I do those. I am used to people weight 100lbs more than me doing those. Even a friend with joint problems that require crutches will get out into the garden, plop down and weed within her reach, move and repeat. I'm health-ish. She is healthy-ish.
So maybe that is why? 'Cus you don't eat or act like a typical fat person?

Date: 2002-09-23 12:23 pm (UTC)And weight gain or loss ease is at least partially due to genetic structure and partially due to early childhood dietary training. I loose easily & gain only with work. (It took significant problems with prolonged stress and a bout with depression to make me gain the weight that I've added in the last 6 years. I've dropped 5-6 pounds in the last 2 months by remembering to eat breakfast, which causes me to eat less at subsequent meals during the day.) You have the opposite situation. You gain easily & loose only with work. As you've noted, small changes of daily habits add up to fairly steady weight loss for you. One of the reasons you've lost weight is that you've been signalling you body that it doesn't *need* to store the extra weight. That also signals the body that it doesn't need to elevate the blood pressure, maintain high levels of cholesterol, etc.
This is the main reason why a general practitioner, who is looking at the overall situation and health, is needed to oversee the work of the speciallists who see everything in relation to how it effects the area of their interest.
