There's something decidedly satisfying about going to a huge hardware store and dredging through bins of huge bolts, nuts, washers and assorted hardware. Mmmm, the smell of mechanical industry.

I spent lunch there to acquire replacement 10mm x 30mm hex-head bolts and ny-lock nuts, to remount the rally-lights once I get home tonight. Thanks to a suggestion on my rider's board I figured out a new way to mount them to give the panniers more room, restore adjustability, and make them a little bit more secure against vibration. Nod bad for $2.10 of parts.

This list will change a few times as I remember things and re-edit this post.

1) remount the rally lights using the new bolts/fasteners
2) buy & safely pack repalcement batteries for all radios and GPS's
3) Pack CPAP and basic clothing into the saddlebags
4) pack clothing-layers (different jackets, spare boots, extra under-jeans layers, etc) into a H2W bag and attach bag to bike
5) Pack roadgear, sunscreen, maps, reservation paperwork and camera into tankbag.
6) re-verify spares (bulbs, fuses, tireplugs, hardware) in right tank pannier
7) re-verify comms gear (autocomm, GMRS, power distribution, mp3) in left tank pannier
8) Bike re-check (done once already): oil, connections, suspension, tires
9) Test-ride and verify all equipment/vibration-proofing
10) Top off the gas-tank.
11) Set out the riding armor, gloves, helmet and day's clothes by Thursday after work.
12) GET TO BED EARLY -- for I leave at OhGod:30 in the morning on Friday for 10-14 hours of on-bike time.
13) Hope for good weather. :)

Optional things:

1) see if there's a sane place to fit the laptop on the bike, which can be left in the motel room and/or Chareth's car while actually in DV (no offroad vibration worries)
2) print out some geocache docs for Chareth to use/read about each geocache (some are virtual and take paperwork to 'find')
3) Mebbe borrow a CF card or two from [livejournal.com profile] revar since they're more vibe-proof than my microdrive
4) Talk to the bossman tomorrow if all goes well and ask for Thursday off as a last-minute thing (or at least half the day), to just chill.

Things I won't get done for this trip:

1) no globalstar rental. Someday I gotta buy me one of those. Too darn expensive, though.
2) no XM (oh, boo-hoo). Giving up on that project for the GS.
3) no permanent Autocom install (more thoughts on that one later)
4) no pelican hardcase for the laptop (which will make optional item #1 difficult) as it won't be in on time
5) no Rino integration into the system. Radio shack doesn't make the right adaptor, and no time to make a secure/vibration-proof one on my own.
