When I bought my trusty D30, which has gotten great use at tons of events over the last 3+ years, I paid $2499. It's 3.34mpix, has terrible autofocus and a few quirks. I love it to death. When the non-CMOS 1D came out, it wasn't my thing. When the D60 came out -- exactly the same as my camera save for 6MP -- I held out. I didn't feel like spending $2200 to get the same problems and same body for just a little more resolution. The sweet fantasy that is the 1Ds came out, at 11M-pix with Canon's best focus system, but at $8,000 there's no way in heck I can afford or justify a camera in that price range. I'd have to be a published photographer makin' good money off his images to even consider it. Well, that or a dotcommer... and the dotcom era ended before I could get a taste.
But now, out comes the 10D. The D30 and D60 are both discontinued; this model replaces them. 6Mpix, much improved autofocus, amazingly improved low-light capability (astrophotography, anybody? *drool*)... and here's the kicker: ~$1600 street. For those of you considering the $600-1000 pricerange digicams -- you should honestly think about saving for a few more months and getting a 10D. My D30 has been an amazing trooper, and the 10D leaves it in the dust. This is the kind of dSLR you can buy and keep for multiple decades. It'll do 13x19 prints that will scare the pants off of film-only folks.
Remember an earlier post I made about having to prioritize my hobbies/wants so that I could do a few of them Right instead of a lot of them half-assedly? Well, I'm *this* close to eBaying off my long-loved speakers and audio gear in order to snag a 10D and some good EOS-L glass to go with it. Thiiiiiiiis close.
