A friend of ours is working on a steampunk costume. For it he needed some nice, solid brass bits in various sizes. We just finished the first three of them: horseshoe-shaped clasps with an inset on the upper edge. This is the biggest of the three.

It's milled out of 3/8" brass and polished up a bit. There's still more to do on it, but we're making good headway on the bits!

The fun part was wresling the bandsaw into chopping mill-sized bits out of the 38lb huge plate of brass we started with. The slab was just too big, and the plasma cutter wouldn't touch it at 3/8", which quite surprised me. It simply conducts heat too well and needs much more power to cut that way. We ended up doing a multipart cut until we had it down enough to fit into the bandsaw to make the final 5"x6" chunks we were after.

More details later on when we get more pieces of the costume done. :)

That's damned shiny...

Can you polish steel, too? I need my straight sword and double daggers polished, and the dremel leaves a lot to be desired. :P

Huh. In the past when trying to do pieces like this, we'd just do a sand casting and post-grinding and polishing. Looks damn nice, though. :)

That is so neat! Very well done! :D I always love seeing your metalwork! :)

BTW, had a question...Would it be possible for you to make one of these brass clasps? And if so, how much would you charge for it?

I can't seem to find one anywhere in the particular size that I need. :(

Unfortunately we don't have the parts to do accurate wire-bending at that level just yet... the pieces we're making we're 2.5D milling out of slabs of brass. That part needs to be bent into shape and flattened appropriately, which I just don't have the tools to do properly at the moment.
