One of the side effects of all the business contacts I'm making is that I keep getting asked, "do you know anybody who designs websites?" A number of small business I'm dealing with are in dire need of either revamping an existing site or making a new one from scratch. Some need full on web-coders who can handle things like online shopping carts and such, while others are looking for artists/designers who can simply make their opening pages look more appealing to customers.

Back in the early part of the decade I knew about two dozen people who called themselves 'web designers'. Nowadays, not so much. If you do this kind of work and are looking for some small business gigs, drop me a line? (tugrik@gmail.com) I'll gladly pass your contact data on to these companies in need. It could score you some work!

Back in the early part of the decade I knew about two dozen people who called themselves 'web designers'.

Early part of the decade? That's because the dot com bubble burst, and every laid-off engineer was not "unemployed" nor even "between jobs," but rather was a "freelance web designer." Sort of how everyone in L.A. is an actor-slash-waiter or actor-slash-bellboy. :)

Exactly. :) I used to make fun of the "oh I'm a web designer" stereotype because it usually meant they knew how to use an entry level WYSIWYG HTML editor and clip-art. Time and technology has weeded these folks out of the market.

As a result, those still left who actually call themselves a web designer (or web coder) are more rare... and I suspect that's why these small businesses can't seem to find anybody. The moment they find out that I host my own sites for my own stuff they pounce in hopes for contact info on a good design person.

I figure someone has to still be out there, and hopefully they'll read my entry and respond!

They could probably find plenty of people (like me) who still use WYSIWYG HTML :D

Got out of it years ago. Too many people wanting me to know hard core CSS, HTML, Flash script, JAVA, Pearl, etc. and not really paying anything nor caring about the design.

I wish I could find Skud's page of types of web developers again. It sounds like those people needed the different types (designers, coders, programmers, webmasters) explained to them.

I’m terrible with the design part :( But I know my HTML and CSS even in my sleep.

That said, I also already have too much to do right now, so not a good candidate for such things :P

I love design, but can't do graphics, and I'm still just treading water with CSS. Page layouts are fun and helpful!

Well I do design and am currently involved interning doing interactive media (aka websites etc) and used to be more of a WSYWIG designer but at the same time that being said I have always known how to go in and really get in the nitty gritty and code by hand and do a hybrid of that because I'm fairly well versed with HTML and CSS. I'll drop you a line though and see where that leads who knows. :)

Hi!
I'm the artist/designer type of web designer and I could definitely use more work.

Send 'em to http://www.gallantrywebdesign.com/ (http://www.gallantrywebdesign.com/) and if I get any jobs based on your recommendation, I'll pay you a 10% finders fee.

Thanks!

Donno how to get hold of you these days in a timely fashion, so apologies in advance for the late contact. Maybe flow me a ph# sometime?
