We've determined that the name 'Dragon' just doesn't fit his personality. What exactly does, we're not sure yet. Considering his very straightforward, solid way of doing things plus his russian-blue style coloring, we're trying to think up a new name. Anybody know how to pronounce the Russian word for "heavy" or "thug"? :) In any case, once his fur grows back a bit more and he's further shown his personality, we'll get a proper name picked for him. Until then we've been playfully calling him Catzilla.

He's still got a ways to go to get his looks back, what with the unfortunate lion cut (for matted fur) and the frankenscar on his ear, but he's making steady progress.

Attitude-wise, he simply goes and does what he wants to. If this means pushing a laptop off your chest and using his weight to pin you down so you'll pet him, so be it. He's a big ol' bucket of purrs who's more than glad to be hefted about. He stares down the dog. He doesn't care about the other cats, which is amusing in its own right.

Oh, and he likes sleeping on people's faces. When this wakes the unfortunate flopped-upon person up, it makes for some great pictures. Hurray for readily available pocket-cams. :)

One more pic under the cut to give a better idea of his size. Since he's a longhair, he'll look even bigger once his fur has grown back.

When I was growing up, we had a russian blue named Quicksilver. I think the attitude is part of the breed; he was the bravest cat I ever knew. He once caught and dragged home a teal, still alive. He took on dogs three or four times his size (which wasn't scrawny).

He was also very protective of his people. He used to walk me and my friends to school in the morning, then escort us home.

Maybe you should name him after a heavy-hitting Vodka brand. ;)

'heavy' is 'тяжелая' which I believe is pronounced tah-geh-lah, if I have read the guide right. It is quite possible I have some sounds wrong.

And thug in the way you want it seems to be бандит - baodeet. I'm trying to get transliteration from here - http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Bookstore/3230/pronunciation.html

н is 'n'—hence, 'bandeet'. Which rather betrays its etymology. I don't think Tug'll be choosing that one.

I'm a Borist myself.

Norwegian synonyms for "big" are, for instance, "stor" (pronounced "stoor"), "diger" (pronounced "deeger"), "svær" (pronounced "sv(the A in "laugh")r"), and "enorm" (like "enormous", except that the O is shorter and the R is that slightly-breathy almost-mute one that Norwegians employ).

'Cause he is.

If you'd named the cat Dragon, then he would have ended up getting continuously drugged by a colony of super intelligent rats that lived under the rose bush in front of your house, to keep him out of their way while they engaged in their super intelligent shenanigans.

If what I read is right, the traditional nickname for a bear would be some form of Mikhail. "Misha" the mascot for the 1980 Olympics uses the diminutive form of Mikhail.

Mikhail (mee-khah-EEL) is the russian form of Michael which is from Hebrew and means "who is like God?"

PS. I'm still voting for "Boris".

For Russian names, I like to use http://heraldry.sca.org/paul/

However, there's an obvious name you're missing.

He's big. He's blue. He's friendly but determined.

You should call him "Mini-Me."

Other names:

From: [identity profile] traveller-blues.livejournal.com
* October (as in the Hunt Furred October), since that's the month you got him in

* Petrov (the doctor from the same movie, and you can always say it's short for 'Roving Pet Me.. or ELSE')

* Glasnost (because he likes glasses and noses)

* Purrastroika

....can you tell I drove Mishael back to work from the work convention hotel 15 minutes ago?

I shall have to come by and visit said cat, allergies or no.

If you wish for a normalish name I vote for Boris, it seems to fit this beast that you call a cat. However I must say that Catzilla is a fitting name for such a massive creature of the feline persuasion.
