At the shop doing some storage work, sandblasting and other shopperly things. It's finally cool enough to turn the heater on for the first time in the season. Revar got up there and lit the pilot light, then turned on the thermostat.

*FWOOMF*

Aaaah, heat...

*snif? sniffsnuff*? EwwWWwWw.

Is that the smell I smell when I first turn the heat on for the season??

Quite often, yes. Burning spiderwebs (and spiders and spider-prey) have a very distinct odor that most folks associate with the first turn on of their heater or BBQ. :)

The problem is that most kinds of small house-spiders *love* little tubes, pipes, grids and hidden away spots. The insides of heaters or BBQ grill gas-jets are perfect for them. So the first time you light up, guess who's there going "what's that strange light...?"

A similar (but worse) scent happens around bug zappers :)

Many moons ago in the shop I was working for, we turned on the ceiling furnace for the first time that season. Being a dusty place, a huge plume of dust came wafting down...right into the face of my manager as he turned around to face it. I watched the whole episode unfold with a twisted glee, and LOL'ed when he got hit in the face with a summer's worth of dust.

Since our HVAC uses the same ducting for both heating and cooling, the webs never build up in the system.

...ewww indeed, yes. x.x I'm rather glad my heater is also responsible for providing hot water; this way, it never gets turned off entirely, and there's no chance for any creepy-crawly critter to make themselves at home on the burners.

Poor spiders ;-;

Hey! Our couch broke. You do welding thingies at the shop still? Could we trade a dinner or a pie or something for some help fixing it? ^-^

A strut broke near a weld, so it'll be a messy fix, but it seems silly to throw out an otherwise functioning couch...
