I'm not even sure where to start. On the social scale if nothing else, this was the single most enjoyable convention that I've ever been to. I was just as busy as always with the photoshoot and other tasks, but somehow I saw more friends, met more new people and got more involved than I ever have before. The con well and truly rocked.
We sold enough tikis to cover our production costs and convention costs (meals and parking as we didn't stay in the hotel). They more than met their goal. We outright gave away a third of them to various convention staff and show participants. The last 50 or so were given to the hotel staff. We gave the basket to one of the managers down by the No-Walls cafe and told her "here, free souvenirs for you and your staff if you'd like; we really appreciate what you do for us all!" She called her staff together and it was a tiki grab-fest, smiles all around. It really made my day to see them wearing the little wooden critters on their name-badges as we paid the check for our meal.
Monoceros Media was received well as a fandom-serving media company. The prints we did for various artists (both for at-table sales and art show) sold quite well. The many little wooden and metal creations made their creators a good bit of money too. Numerous stand-ups, banners and acrylic ads helped dealers promote their wares. The wood, acrylic and glass awards at both the Masquerade and FNL went over great. The photoshoot was enjoyed by many as were the mega-sized prints from it that got posted around the hotel building. (The most dramatic was the crowd-shot that Kyreeth took after the parade. It got made into a 4'x6' banner, strung up in the lobby. )
My goal with Monoceros Media is to provide affordable, accessible and high-quality services to folks in fandom who might not otherwise be able to get them, in hopes of improving the artwork around the fandom as a whole. There's so much good art being made -- why not help the artists put it all up on actual fine-art materials instead of washed-out Kinkos copies? Why not enable someone to work in very large media who previously thought it was too expensive to risk? Why not give someone the opportunity to try out new media methods like laser etching? The more we can help, the better things get for artists and their customers all around. It just feels good to do, so we're more than glad to pitch in our time instead of just trying to make a buck.
There are many folks that I promised to get in contact with and I will do my best. If I missed your contact data, please, drop me a line at tugrik@gmail.com so we can get back in touch. Now I know why people carry those little notebooks and pencils around with them at conventions. Too many names, emails and faces to associate, aieeee! :)
I have a ton of shout-outs, questions, comments and stories to post about later. For now I have to get the nose-horn back to work's grindstone and finish out my monday. Thank you to everybody that lent a hand, and I hope everybody has safe travels back home!
