Inspired a bit by a friend's upcoming shindig, combined with my desire to get a fun group together anyway, I'd like to announce a proper "Welcome to the New Shop" party.

The Date: August 1, 2009
The Time: Show up anytime from 10:00a on, but we'll not get food cookin' until 1:00pm. Will run up to as late as folks want.
The Location: Monoceros Media / Belfry Prototyping in San Jose (95111).
The Haps: BBQ, drinks, music, hanging out, talking projects, playing with big tools, fun things like training on how-to-weld or CNC gear, etc.

While we're still gathering more tools and toys to make it happen, our goal is to set ourselves up like a sort of friend-centric Tech Shop here in the southern end of the Silicon Valley. I want to encourage people with neat ideas and fun projects to show up and work on them. At the same time, I've never actually thrown a planned-out party before, so it's something I want to try. I'm hoping that it'll get more of you nice folks interested in big projects and sharing ideas. Or, heck, just getting to chill out together and meet more of you. If you've ever thought of coming over to check the place out but never had the excuse, hey, now you've got one!

I'm going to do the party-rental thing to get a few big tables and a whole mess of chairs. We'll be bringing a grill or three to set up outside. Knowing us, we'll probably fabricate one. There's enough space inside the shop for a big gathering. Heck, we could turn it into a dance floor if we wanted to. :) There's also plenty of parking at the shop so no worries there.

Our neighbors at the shop are incredibly cool folk who run a machine shop with freakishly-cool, huge-scale CNC gear. They're also skaters, psycho-bicyclers and laid back guys who are more than likely to join us instead of worry about any noise or ruckus we can make (and don't worry, they're quite fandom-friendly folk, I'm sure).

Fandom things, including fursuiting, is A-OK. We even have a nice changing-room sized bathroom with shower!

If you want to pitch in to help, I'd love it... especially since I'm not big_party_skills:ok. I encourage others to get involved. Have a BBQ recipe or favorite dish you want to share? Got a nifty LED project you'd like to show or teach others how to do? Want to expose us all to your music? Yes, please. :)

If you don't have a car, we're just barely down the street from the Capitol Caltrain station (and not much farther to the Light-Rail station) and will gladly pick-up/drop-off folks. If you're from out of area and would like to come by there are a number of motels up and down the Monterey Highway next to the shop I can send you info on. If you'd rather crash at the shop overnight, no problem, just bring a sleeping bag and pad; it's open floorspace city but not much more than that. :)

So I can plan food, tables and such, I'm requiring RSVPs. If you want to come, please drop me an email to tugrik@gmail.com with the subject Shop Party! . I'll respond with the shop's address and phone #. Let me know who and what you want to bring, too, so I can build a pool of resources to go with the guest list. If you need special things like DC power supplies, soldering gear or metal/wood stock for a project you'd like to share -- Can Do.

Any questions, comments or suggestions for a first time party-thrower like me? Drop 'em here and I'll answer. Thanks! And hopefully see you all there!

(note: all comments screened for folks' privacy if they're asking about travel and such outside of email)

One project I thought of that others might enjoy is using the CNC mill to make wind-up key shapes that can be used as key chains.

What format should a file be in to use on the CNC mill?

Drop Revar a message (revar@belfry.com) to discuss formats; revs is the metal-CNC nut. :) But I think most any major CAD format would be fine!
