Spent the weekend in Yosemite with friends after taking care of some family stuff. Like the others in the group I've got a bunch of photos to process and post online eventually. But just for fun, there's one series I'd like to post real quick.

Three of our campmates were insane and hiked to the top of Half Dome. Some of the rest of us, being slightly less insane ourselves, piled in the TC and drove up to the nearest vista, Glacier Point. For the first group to reach the top it took some seven miles of hiking, 5000+ft of ascent and a half a day. For us it took under an hour to cover the 35-or-so miles of twisty road. Once at our respective destinations we're actually only 2.8 miles apart, separated by a big, deep gap of empty air.

Once the crazy climbers reached the top they had cel signal from a distant tower. Reveille was able to squeak out an SMS with his phone to let us know his group had arrived at the summit. Kannik had a nice, distance-visible red shirt. Garth lent me his 200mm lens and 2x extender. Even with hazy air it does a decent job when mounted on my 5DmkII camera.

Due to their size, the resulting images are here behind the cut.

I like that lens.

And folks who climb half-dome willingly? Crazy. :)

Wow, there's a lot more people up there than I would have thought! I guess that's yosemite in the summer for you, though. ;3

Hiking up is the easy part. Coming back down is a real knee-killer.

Nice zoom!

Oh niiiiice.

I went to Yosemite for the first time in May, when all the waterfalls were roaring. Glacier Point took a long time to get to, but man, that view.

Wow, that scenery is magnificent! What a great place to spend the weekend. That lens is pretty impressive, too. :)

Epic pictures! What's really crazy is planning your THIRD attempt after getting turned around by lightning TWICE already at the cables on the side of the dome. What a great momento!

Crazy!!

Also, thanks for sharing the photos. The one time I've been there it was covered in snow.

Whitefox actually had the red shirt. ;) Kannik was blue and mine was black. ;)

Holy crap, that's a neat progression of zoomage. :D Yeah, and the red-shirt didn't die (though my legs are super wobbly today).

That's good timing, cause most of the time I was sitting and cooking chicken, or being a lazyfox and lying in the sun :>

Holy scrotnik. I've never seen a photo of Half Dome from that angle before. That thing is simply stupendous.

Thank you again for letting me tag along with you and [livejournal.com profile] revar. Was great to try my hand at your camera. Someday I hope to buy one as nice. I can't thank you enough for taking photos of me in suit there.

Wow, that's cool! You can actually hike there rather than needing any actual climbing equipment? I really want to try it now; I've never been to Yosemite.

Do it! The hike is pretty tough, bring plenty of water and calories along :) There are springs along the way to refill yer bottles.

And you can climb the face, we saw a french group topping out as we got there. I wanna try it ^.^
