BlueNoise #3
(Recorded indoors. Very white-noisey. 12/17/2009)

Clip Details:

Every Thursday evening the anthro fans in the southern end of the Bay Area get together at what my friend calls "Chikkin". It's a simple social gathering at a local Santa Clara University watering hole. Originally it was called Cluck-U, then University Chicken. Nowadays it's been renamed to "Smoke Eaters" and was featured on the Travel Channel's show, "Man vs. Food." While it's usually just a college crowd it also gets the occasional food-tourist type trying to conquer their hottest wing sauce.

It's a sizable group that shows most weeks. Normally the loose group of fandom folk are mixed between outside and in, but during the colder months more crowd inside. Already packed to the gills like a good sports bar the place only gets noisier as the furs show up. The sound isn't screamingly loud, though; it's just very busy. And the way the local fandom folk socialize, there are always multiple conversations going on atop each other, even at the same table.

While most people don't think about it the ambience of the place really does affect how people socialize vs. other fandom gathers. The overburden of sound can help the shy folks fit in a little, while at the same time it can buffer-down the overly loud folks a bit. While this precludes any deep-and-introspective type of interaction, it's great for casual hang-out-and-drink contact. When the group spills out into the porch and on into the parking lot, smaller/quieter areas come together with completely different flavors of conversation.

This clip is one minute of audio of the inside of Smoke Eaters during last week's well-attended meet-up. It was distilled down and patched together from a few minutes of capture. In the BlueNoise posts I never want to violate anybody's privacy nor make a verbal component be the subject... therefore I spent some time mixing bits together just enough that there shouldn't be any real line of words or individual conversations you can follow. Instead I just wanted to catch what it felt like to sit at a chair surrounded by friends eating hot wings, drinking beer and just hanging out. It's like a miniature convention crammed into a short hour or two and has a special bit of joy to it, even through the cacophony.

Side-note: I made sure to show the recorder to all the folks sitting around me and the fact that I was recording random samples. Even so, if anybody recognizes their own voice in the clip and wants me to take this down, just say so and I'll pull it. While JayGryph tells me this is a "dear lord don't sue me" clause, it's actually because I don't want people to avoid me for fear that they'll be recorded and posted without their consent. I don't want to be That Guy&trade .

Oh, it seems like I missed this installment when you posted it. Very interesting, though; a glimpse into a world I'm not part of but that does indeed seem warm and welcoming.
