Sep. 9th, 2002 05:55 pmThe weekend was spent trying fancy dishes with a mad-chef-skills friend, watching Spirited Away again with the sister/bro-in-law pair, and driving
revar around some of the more hidden areas around the valley. I've discovered quite a few thanks to two-wheeled travel, including an old rocket-motor testing facility.
Otherwise, the home is calm, as is the life. I'll jot another note on the 'why' for that probably later tonight. While the quietness leaves me feeling mildly detached, it's great for catching up with things at work. My normal insanty will resume by the weekend, I'm more than sure. I actually enjoy the anticipation of it.
A playful side-thing: A friend named Gaelif is helping me with some new LJ userpic sketches, so I can have better icons for moods. I'd rather use my 10 slots for post-related mood things, instead of those silly micro-icons anyways. Here's my favorite one so far, in progress, which just has me grinning from ear to ear:

"Snarly"
Yes, I consider this drawing to be quite accurate to the character, though this may surprise some folks who know me online. If you're curious, ask me about it sometime. The finished versions will end up here in LJ after a bit.
I always feel guilty when asking for art; it's a skill I don't have. I do my best to make sure a fair payment, trade, or return favor is made, though it's a suprisingly touchy social dance sometimes. At the core of it is my belief that artwork is a cherished skill with notable value; those who provide it are due proper compensation. :)
If anybody is interested, I'll LJ-post up a page of the small group of drawings I've purchased or been given over the years. Most of them are online, but the're scattered about without any kind of annotations.

Date: 2002-09-09 08:46 pm (UTC)Posting more art would be well received on this end. ^_^ I have no drawing talent as well and am on the look-out for someone to draw some foxes for me. (The 4 footed kind.)

Date: 2002-09-10 06:16 am (UTC)Okay, mostly I see Tugrik online as being kinda this all-purpose, sorta OOC, generally nice guy. From things like the comment on snarly being accurate to the character, and the stuff on the card about how one foreleg is actually a prosthesis, I get the feeling there's a lot of backstory for the character, maybe from TinyPlots that happened years back.
I'd be curious to learn that backstory, if there is one?

Date: 2002-09-10 04:16 pm (UTC)Back a long time ago (Islandic Era, if that makes sense to you), about 10% of the backstory was roleplayed out. From what I remember of the old crew (on both Islandia and later Crossroads), folks who were involved seemed to enjoy it well enough. As my awareness of 'fandom' grew, I kind of stepped back from the deeper bits of roleplay.
Too many people were _way_ too involved in their own backstories. The not-so-fine-line between 'good backstory roleplay' and 'obsessive fan behavior' was often crossed, taking people from being fun roleplayers to being Weird Fanboys that needed to get off the muck, get a life and move out of their parents' basement. The MUCK these days is still full of this type of people, and I really don't care to be seen as one of them.
As a result, I find it hard to express too much of my backstory in an online context, for concern of being seen as the same character-obsessive type I see all too commonly in others. I instead keep the Tug character pretty laid back and day-in-the-lifeish, using him as a mask to type through; a comfortable balance. I still groove on artwork of the character, but find myself always concerned that displaying enthusiasm towards such things will get me lumped in with the strange-fans once more.
The other 90% of the background is half in my head, half on paper. Most of the on-paper happened back in Jr. High/highschool days, and yee cripes does it show. I can't bring myself to shred the stuff, but the urge is incredible; instead it just lives in various lockboxes and files like the tax forms and business papers do. :) Someday I'll have distanced myself from the negative feelings I have about fandom and can maybe pull a little fun back out again. The world built around the monoceri characters is actually pretty cool, in my opinion, and far exceeds the little daily-life stuff I roleplay currently.
