Just as an aside: Thanks to Frang, I've been in on the last few betas of a 3D chat-world (kind of like a graphical mu*) called There. If you haven't signed up for the beta, go do so! It's definately worth the time spent.

I'm having way too much fun with it -- and being sneaky by keeping a There window open at work sometimes. I don't know why seeing a 3D virtual world is so satisfying some days. Maybe it has something to do with being a visualization assistance. All I know is that sitting on top of an Outlook window full of annoyances, vendors, and Diamond Daveisms... is my private surf-shack, with palms gently rustling in the ocean breeze.

It may only be virtual, but taking a nap on the lanai really helps the workday.

I've got a whole mess of thoughts on this whole 3D-mu* concept... I'll think on them over my little vacation-break and jot something about it when I get back. For now, it's just all too cool.

I don't imagine it's at all friendly for those of us that are bandwidth impaired?

Like el Senior Tugrik I've been in the There beata for a while, all of it while on a dial-up line. It's far more forgiving than you would think because they, There, Inc., realize that the majority of people in the United States are still on dial-up.

I love being There also - and its great to see friends there! Last night I was feeling sorta punky so slipped off early to hit the sack.

*warm snugs!*

I got the processor and video set up to telecommute to some of the jobs there. Now to go approach the moderators of some of my oldest communities to see if they will vouch for me having one or two years experience. I would ask you, but I've only ever been social where you control things.
Thanks for the neato thing, I signed up for beta consideration. Thank you for a job lead.

I signed up for the beta, too... but I have a feeling they're not gonna take me, 'cos I have a Mac. And what's this about the lowest choice in 'computer speed' being '800MHz or lower'? Maybe it's time I upgraded from 400MHz...

Yup, there it is... "We're very sorry, but according to your answers on the survey, your computer does not currently meet the There minimum system requirements." It tells me I need to upgrade my Mac to at least Windows 98 or 2000.

Where I come from, that's considered a downgrade...

Yeah, the fact that the beta signup form has seventeen different flavors of Windows listed, and only one option for Macintosh, made me suspect that there'd be no Mac client. If there was one, there would've likely been the choice of "Macintosh OSX" and "Macintosh OS9", at least, maybe even a couple sub-varieties of X.

*shrug* I went ahead with filling out the form anyway, because if they get a huge pile of beta signups that say Mac, maybe they'll write a Mac version of the client.

We can hope! :)
