I'm often finding and shuffling about bits of both obscure and modern technology. At times I get enough to make a coyote-box to either fill a need or give away, like my habit of rebuilding old laptops and handing them to friends. Other times I find something old but nifty to give to someone who values such things, like finding an original NeXT to give to Frang. I rarely keep the history-pieces myself unless they're something that I find incredibly interesting. It's more fun to nose them over to someone who really appreciates them.

Right now I've just scored quite a find. I'm trying to figure out which one of my friends (RL, on-muck, or LJ) are the biggest Apple nerds who want some functional history pieces.

I have in my collection Apple Newtons, Qty. 3. One is the 'new style' with the PCMCIA on the top, minus stylus, but wth two rechargable batteries, an external recharger, but no direct power cord (you can get one at radio shack) It's v1.3. Another is a very limited 'clear' edition, that says "In Appreciation for your contribution to the Lindy Project, January 1994". It has a stylus, power supply and runs v1.10. The third is the older style, with the PCMCIA on the side, a big sticker saying "Confidential: do not use in public areas", and a bunch of (now invalid) internal contact numbers/emails printed on the back. It has a power cord and is also v1.10. All three function though could probably use some TLC and software reloading before they function right.

As I'm sure I have more than one Newton-head friend I'd rather give one to each instead of all 3 to one person. If you have something nifty to trade (the point here is to share the 'oo, neat!' factor, not to gain or lose money) you'll get your pick of which of the three you want. :)

In the future I'll start posting more of these finds, as I've somewhat saturated my local friends with such things and it's time to spread the LURV around, LJ style. *chuckle* Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] yoru -- I found the memorychip! It's only 128, but it's yours if y'want it.

Now that I think about it, I'll probably be fine without it. But thank you!
BTW, I did that little "survey" thing for There. It got accepted so now I'm just waiting for one of them invitations.

I think the one labelled "Confidential: do not use in public areas" could probably get some interesting responses from students and faculty, if I had it with me around the office and campus.

"Oh this? Oh....it's nothing....nothing at all..." *Mutter what the hell was I thinking, leaving this out?, as I quickly sweep it into a desk drawer and quickly try to change the subject.... ;X)

Unfortunately, I've never been much of a techno person. When I moved from a 2-bedroom apartment to a bedroom in a house, after my layoff from Agere Systems, I had to shed a lot of my excess baggage. :X/

I iz uh Apple Geek

Course, the problem is what do I have to trade that might be interesting? Pocket lint? Not likely.

Oh! How 'bout an old John Nunnemacher piece of artwork, from CF4- "The Bloo Genie" I think was the name of it.

I think you remember that one :-)

Eeee!

Ahem.

I know that there's a still-kicking Apple Newton community out there, amazingly enough, with people still writing apps, still working on things for the Newt.

And in rereading this Wired article (http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,54580,00.html), I'm reminded that the Newt can make a nice little MP3 player with a homekudged dongle.

Back in '96 I wanted a clear Newton.

(puppydogeyes?)

Omigosh... Newtons?!

Cool! Want! :) I'd love to add any of them to my collection!

Right now I have two Newton MP130's, a Newton Keyboard, a 2MB Flash Card, a couple of leather Newton cases from Apple, and a bunch of styluses, but that's the extent of the Newton section of my Apple museum. :)

Do they have any model number on 'em? It sounds like the 'new style' one is a MP2000 or MP2100, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'v1.3', as I didn't think any of the ones with a top-loading PCMCIA ran less than NewtOS 2.0...

I am really really interested in these. :) Especially the clear one, and second-especially the 'new style' one if it's a 2000 or a 2100 (as those two can do Ethernet). But the 'Confidential' one is intriguing too. Where'd you come by these?

By the way, someone's even written shareware for Mac OS X called 'NewtSync' which will sync Address Book and iCal to a Newton. :)

My bad -- the N2K can in fact run NewtOS 1.3, and I forgot that the OS version info appears during wakeup. :)

I'm told that Lindy was the codename for the MP120, so wow, that's a launch gift. :) Where DID you get that?

Well, the clear one is the one Roon wants, and its' the one that has the project codename. You two can work it out which one you'd each want. :)

While not necessary, it would be cool -- anything nifty to trade for it? And I got these from the actual developers, some friends of mine who were emptying out closets of stuff they didn't want anymore.

Most items of 'cool but not essential' status were jettinsoned in my move to Florida, and I haven't added much since then. I'll root around and see what I have left. You have some idea of what I had out in California; anything spring immediately to mind? I do have a stack of Lego sets that I'm letting 'age' so I can trade 'em someday later -- want some original Star Wars Lego, maybe? :)

The first Newton you mentioned, can you verify whether it's a 2000 or a 2100, or something earlier? If [livejournal.com profile] roon has his heart set on the clear one, then a 2K wouldn't make a bad consolation prize. *grins*

And if you ever happen upon any more old Mac, Newton, or NeXT stuff, please ping me and let me know! :)

The one with the removable battery pack is an H1000 and is marked 'not FCC approved', so it was probably a prototype. It works well. The clear one is a MessagePad 110, and the "do not use in public areas" confidential one is also a MessagePad 110.
