So... I was testing out the four-ink-black modes and looking for subject material. I found a creative-commons released super-high-rez (40" x 80" x 300dpi!) black and white image of the Carina Nebula. I was doing small prints of it and seeing how much detail I could squeak into certain media types.

The downside of the printer being on a network server in the far end of the house is sometimes you boff a print-size setting and don't notice until you head over and see it spooled out on the floor.

That's 24" x 48", on Hahnemuhle Bamboo 290gsm fine art matte paper. It's very pretty and highly detailed. The print is 100-year lightfast and waterproof, though it will abrade if you scratch it with a sharp object. It's also something I have absolutely nowhere to put, and it'd be total shame to throw it away.

Since it's creative-commons I'm not allowed to sell it, but it's perfectly okay for me to give it away. If anybody local wants it, drop by and snag it any time! I'd mail it out but you'd have to pay me the usual $12 to ship it ($4 of tubes, $8 fedex ground), which I'm not sure if it'd affect the 'do not sell' license or not. In any case, if you like b/w astronomical prints and would like this one, please come get it. :)

Questions!

I want it, can you piggyback the shipping with a peggy tarot poster?

And how does shipping price get effected on shipping to Canada?

:D Omg STARS!

Consider it yours. :) Sure, it'll piggyback perfectly with a poster print. Shipping price to Canada is a little higher, but not a ton. If/when you order a poster, I'll just send it for normal rate.

Nothing in any of these "free" licenses prevent people from charging/recouping any distribution or production costs. Technically you could offer to run as many of these off as you wanted, with proper attribution, and charge for the cost of ink and paper.

The actual text in CC is "You may not exercise any of the rights granted to You in Section 3 above in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation." I could easily argue that distribution "at cost" is not compensation (meaning profit) but simply additional costs in production of the derivative work.

Remember, GNU originally made money selling the tapes of RMS' software. He considered (and still does) this totally compatible with his uber-free view.

Just so you know, by the way - I got more than a few people asking how I printed the show out so beautifully!

Cooool. :) Send 'em my way via email, if they wish a contact. I could always use more business! I have a laser engraver to save up for...

BTW: I've had a few folks ask me how to buy one from the show. I sent them your way to ask direct, or towards ArtSpots for prints.

Cool. I sent some email to the gallery owner asking (a) just what sold and (b) what the hell prices I ended up setting (I just remember the vague price-range!); once she responds, I'll post something in LJ.
