Neither Revar nor I went to Anthrocon this year, but many of our products from Monoceros Media did! We're a fabrication and prototyping shop that does large-format printing, fine art printing and laser engraving work. These were all done on contract either for artists attending AC or for AC directly:

  • Super-sponsor hex badges, 1/8" glowy acrylic

  • Fursuiter badges, 1/8" glowy acrylic

  • Masquerade badges, 1/4" clear acrlic

  • "Fur in Black" badges (product by Cooner), 1/4" clear acrylic
(Check over here for more info)
  • Fine-art prints for 14 different artists. This includes prints at tables, art show entries and custom sales
  • Table-banners for a few different groups
  • 42" x 70" giant posters for the dances at Anthrocon

Did you go to Anthrocon? If you did and you saw any of these items in person, I'd love to hear your opinion of them. What worked? What could be better?

I'm especially interested to find any pictures of the dance posters hanging up, to see how the size worked vs. the venue location. I'm also dying to see if the glowy-acrylic badges worked under the black-lights and such. This is why I'm eagerly watching LJ, Twitter and other feeds for posts of videos from the dances. :)

Reading my friends' reports so far it sounds like it was the best AC yet, which makes me smile quite a lot. I'm glad we could help with the little details like this. If you have any interest in products like this for your own events, conventions or other projects, please, don't hesitate to ask. You can reach me at tugrik@gmail.com. Thanks again!

Ooh, those glowy green badges are pretty!

(I didn't attend AC, though, so I can't give any further feedback that's not solely based on those pictures.)

The badges were greatly appreciated. You got a nice message that they came from your studio. I was just wondering if there was some code to the dots below the supersponsor badge.

For that, you need to talk to Triggur. It's his puzzle to explain or leave a mystery. :)

i love the idea with the clear badge! however i was thinking more of a regular badge of my char etched into one of these. then having a small led to iluminate to etched areas. by doing this, the badge will be suttle and pretty in the light, blut glow awesome to the led color you want for raves and itll be easy to read. if you like the idea and if possible, id make a negative design for the etching so send ya. i just dont have a lazer etcher. lemme know what you think! maybe the future of badges for cons to come!

We're working on a design for a small, affordable illuminator, yes. :)

I'm always glad to do custom badges if you have the art. As they are individually fabricated on the laser, I can do singles or big quantities, no worries.

The green acrylic looked completely awesome with it's mysterious self illumination effect. Loved that! The masquerade badges and John's custom pieces looked terrific too, -very, very memorable! Hope to see my own project too!

yeah, my apologies about not being able to make that happen in time. The first ones I tried were too 'tippy' to make good standups, and the registration of print-to-laser was being problematic. I have a number of issues to solve, tech-wise, before I can reliably do stand-ups. The other orders kept me from exploring it further pre-con.

The green badges were really a nice touch for the theme of the con this year. I ended up buying two because I really liked them. The face I could just -barely- tell which side was the engraved side was nice, as well.

I don't recall seeing any of the posters/prints, as I really didn't inquire about who made who's prints. D:

I thought the badges were a fantastic idea, having received one of the badges as a sponsor. (And had me thinking on the way home that should I ever be in a situation where I would like to give out party favors, I should have to contact you to find out your smallest practical run size.) Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to see it under blacklight. I also saw one of the "Fur in Black" badges (which, I had I known about, I would have jumped on one) and thought it was very cool.

Little details, yes, definitely add a lot.

Hey, just FYI, if you (or anyone else) wants an F.I.B. badge still, I'll be making an announcement with details in the next week or so on my journal here and on FA for another batch I'll be sending out by mail for folks who missed 'em ... or you can send me a note to add your email address to the list. ^.^

Ohh, what shapes can you do the glowy acrylic stuff in?
(And how much would they cost?)

Date: 2009-07-08 07:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tugrik.livejournal.com
Any! The laser cuts up to 1/2" acrylic pretty easily, leaving a flame-polished edge.

Cost depends on sq-footage of acrylic, thickness and level of detail required for raster-etchings.

I thought the badges were awesome, weather it be the Sponser/Super Sponser, Fursuiter or F.I.B. badge...they all got a lot of attention.

As for the dance posters, I felt they were easy to spot...though they could be just a little bit bigger. (While I could read the bottom section of the poster, reading the upper section was a little tricky.)

They were HUGE, but I know what you mean, their placement made the text a bit tricky to read unless you got up close.

We're trying different locations each year, it's a little tricky because we have to have the union hang them during setup, and there isn't a lot of time for experimentation because we've got a lot of other equipment to set up as well.

Generally, the size is going to remain about the same, as there's a hard limit to one dimension :)

I thought the green badge... things... were really badass, honestly. I didn't get the Sponsor one because I didn't have time to upgrade my membership level.

But I got the one for being a fursuiter. Looking at it right now! I really love it... One of the first things I did when I arrived was go and get one.

I saw the other badges (Fur in Black, and Masquerade) - but didn't know where they came from at the time. I liked those ones QUITE a bit. Something about the style and everything. I really liked this year's theme with the badges and everything.

Really not looking forward to stone age stuff next year >_>

Amazingness, I sort of ran into receiving my fursuiter one while trying to find the headless lounge before I passed out. Haha, and I jumped on the chance at Cooner's FIB badges and OMG I LOVE IT! Very neat idea, definitely a one of a kind badge.

I loved seeing the tags and everything in general. I have both of the green and the rectangle clear ones. I used to work in a sign shop, and it was awesome seeing laser engraved / cut acrylic again.

Did Mary Minch do the dance poster design?

I *think* so. The poster was handled by Simbalion. You'd have to ask him for artist info. I'm just the printing-tech. :)

the green badges were AWESOME. i bought onew of the little ones from the con store and begged one of my fursuiter friends for one of the fursuiter ones because i have a great love of all things tentacled! and the FIB badges are awesome! JUST WONDERFUL!

from what i understand there was no black lights at the dance (which means i actually could have been in there...) but the little UV given off by the blue lights on the roof of the convention center lit them up nice and of course they glowed at dusk when the sun was not direct but there is that light quality that makes black light stuff like that glow anyway.

I know that since i have seen that i am going to actually do engraved art on Mica now (i had picked up an rotary dremel like engraver before the con and found it works wonderful on mica!) I had been thinking people may not like it but i see people do so.

I LOVED both the fursuiter tag and the supersponsor badges. I wore the fursuiter badge even when I wasn't in-suit; it was that cool. :)

I wore it during both of the fursuit dances, but it wasn't very dark at either of those. So, I don't know if the glow will be very visible. Still, the badges looked great!

I just loved the "clink clink clink" sound when I was wearing the green badges.

I also got Cooner's FIB badge, which got major attention. I guided anyone who wanted one to Cooner's table.

It was cool to see the other long ones on other people. The poster was amazing too.
